LiveWriter toolbar

I like the LiveWriter toolbar, simple and clean. I wonder why they just didn't do away with the menus like Office 2007. At least only one menu item has subitems, so its pretty painless to use since there is no feature exploration anxiety as you learn the application.

The one thing that is baffling me is the button shown below.

Its located right after the "Check Spelling" toolbar button. What does it do?

It blogs a page or selected text to Windows Live Writer.

Blogging images with Live Writer

Live Writer lets you can include images in your weblog entries. The images are uploaded to your FTP server, the link to the image is then used in your blog post. Very neat.

If like myself you don't want to think about ftp servers, hosting, administration and all the stuff that comes with using the "Upload images to an FTP server" feature, you can think about using flickr for blogging images. Tim Heuer's awesome  Flickr4Writer  plugin lets you blog pictures from flickr.

Flickr4Writer  :  plugin for Windows Live Writer that enables a user to browse a Flickr user repository and insert an image from Flickr into a Writer post.

The other reason why flickr is an obvious choice is that flickr has image management tools. fun, fun.

Live Writer Onscreen is now live

I just released LiveWriter OnScreen, a Live Writer add-on that lets you screen snip, upload to flickr, blog your feeds and more ...

Check it out and leave some feedback. ;)

Live Writer Onscreen -now live

Beta 1 is available, we have a feed too.

I have been using LW-Onscreen since Tuesday when all the features that I had initially envisioned were ready. Like everyone else I learnt about Live Writer on Sunday from techcrunching Michael Arrington. I am pretty impressed with Live Writer as a blogging tool but even more impressed with the SDK. Its very well done. Simple and easy to use. So far it has exceeded my expectations.

I am going to run the beta all weekend to test the quality of the default user experiences and then see where we go from there. Feel free to post comments, ask questions or request features in my comments area.

The Live Writer SDK in a nutshell

It has 23 types, 5 enumerations and 2 delegates.

They also provide "a number of helper classes for assistance with common plugin development tasks"

The SDK is broken down into 2 sub frameworks. One for working with the application (Live Writer) and another for extending the application, the plugin framework.

  • Application API for launching Writer to create new posts or "Blog This" for Links, Snippets, Images, and Feed Items.

  • Content Source Plugins for extending the capabilities of Writer to insert, edit, and publish new types of content.

Scoble on Windows Live Writer

Scoble is noticing that blogging is changing.  Below are other folks talking about Live Writer.

I am liking Windows Live Writer so far, but I’m not pushing the edges like some others are (I saw a bunch of complaints about bugs in some of the weirder features. I just type and post, so it works great for me so far).

Anyway, just saw that Ed Holloway has an Ink Blog Beta out for Tablet PC users.

One problem with the Windows Live Writer is the tagging support. It has categories, but that capability sucks. So I gotta open each post back up in the browser and apply categories there.

Changes the way you write your blog

The reviews for Live Writer are trickling in, most positive, most missing what makes it really different. The included SDK  might not be unique to Live Writer, but its better than anything available at the moment(hint).

GigaOM says  "It is not often, I say good things about Microsoft products, but with this free-blogging tool, I have to say: write on! And just to set the record straight, the current post was written in Ecto."

Techcrunching Michael Arrington instantly gets its :

"Windows Live Writer has a lot of bells and whistles - preview in WYSIWYG or HTML mode, support for most blogging platforms (Windows Live Spaces, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, WordPress and others), easy insertion of photos and things like Live.com Maps, and tagging. Good stuff, but none of it differentiates it from existing year old products.

What does differentiate Live Writer is that they’ve released an API that allows developers to extend the capabilities of the software to publish additional content types."

Below is the self review from Liveside by Harrison Hoffman

Whether you are a full time blogger or you are just blogging as a hobby, we all have a need for the same thing: an easy to use blog editor to publish our entries from. Luckily, Microsoft recognized this need for a What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) blogging tool and delivered in the form of Windows Live Writer.

Welcome to the world of blogging indeed. Windows Live Writer makes editing and publishing blog entries so easy and user friendly that anyone can do it. When setting Writer up, there are just a few steps to get your blog rolling with the software. First, you select your type of blog from the list of available services. This is what is currently compatible with Windows Live Writer:
- Windows Live Spaces
- Blogger
- LiveJournal
- TypePad
- Wordpress
- All blogs that support RSD (Really Simple Discoverability)
- Metaweblog API
- Moveable Type API
They are working on making virtually all blog types compatible with Writer, so if you do not see your type on the list, do not despair, it may be coming soon.
After you select your blog type, Writer will actually pull down your stylesheet from your blog so that when writing your posts, you can actually see what the post will look like once it is published. Finally, you will have to provide the login information that you use to post on your site.

After the setup, you are all ready to go with your spiffy new blogging software.
As I mentioned earlier, a huge feature of Windows Live Writer is that it has a WYSIWYG interface, so your posts will actually look the same as they do in Windows Live Writer when they are published. There is no messing around with code and HTML when writing your posts, unless that's your thing, then they do have an HTML/Web Layout mode you can use.
One of my favorite features of Writer is definitely the easy image editing. Windows Live Writer makes it extremely easy to resize, layout, and add effects to your photos.

In our exclusive interview (it will be posted right after this post) with J.J. Allaire, Architect of the Windows Live Writer team, he informed me that there is a screenshot plugin in the works for Writer. This should make life a lot easier for tech bloggers especially. I know I am looking forward to that.
One other cool feature of Writer is the ability to publish Windows Live Local maps within your blog posts. This is technically a plugin to the program, although it comes preinstalled with it. This aspect definitely brings in the theme of tying all of the Windows Live services together.
Finally, along with the download, Microsoft will be releasing an SDK (Software Developer Kit) for Windows Live Writer to allow for greater expandibility of the software. Some possible uses of the SDK include embedding images from online photo sites, embedding video within your posts, inserting tags from services such as Technorati, and much more.
Windows Live Writer is available now
here. So, go grab it, try it out, and let us know what you think! Also, check out the team's first blog post here.

About Blogging 2007

Blogging hasn't changed much since around 2002. While its been widely accepted and every media person already has a blog (is that mainstream?), the tools have stayed pretty much the same. Blogger lowered the barriers to entry for blogging considerably but never invested in improving the overall blogging experience. They focused on building a very available hosting system. They succeeded at that but Spaces is winning in the overall blogging experience. Recently editing tools have improved considerably. That's different, that's a really exciting part of blogging today. Is like Blogging 2.0. Maybe you've heard of MS Office, used by 400 million people etc. etc., Well Word 2007 blogs. If that is not exciting enough today MS released Windows Live Writer, a desktop application that makes it easier to compose compelling blog posts using Windows Live Spaces or your current blog service.

Easy blogging from Word is a big thing, since most folks can use Word and if you are creating a document, Word is probably better than anything you might find out there. The result is more folks will blog and the quality will be better. I have been using Word 2007 since the beta release date and I just installed Live Writer. I am impressed. I wonder how many people are blogging with Word. That's what this blog is about. Blogging with Word 2007, Live Writer and anything else that will do a better job than what has been around so far. In essence this blog is about Blogging 2.0, the new new blogging experiences.  I am currently using Live Writer so that will be the initial focus. Blogging with Word 2007 is also going to be really fun so I'll get to that too.

If you know of any other cool blogging editors that can keep up with Live Writer and Word in features and support for different blogging hosts leave me a comment.  Blogging is fun again.

I am also using w.bloggar for template edits (Live Writer don't like Blogger too much in the template department). w.bloggar is Marcelo L. L. Cabral's freeware blog-editing that held the fort while the majors tried to figure out if blogging was knowledge work.( w.bloggar seems to have vanished for now-http://www.wbloggar.com/, hope he can survive).  Its much harder for a small software project to compete on features with a big software machine like Microsoft, and now that MS is blogging and making blogging tools, I am not sure who will survive.
